A Cindy Herron (En Vogue) Inspired Design, Then and Now

It's important to once in a while, look back to see where you have been and how far you have come. I did that recently. I pulled out some of my fashion illustrations and designs from the earlier years, and I reflected on my past achievements. This post is all about a fashion show at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Boston and my entry into the Air France Fashion Design Competition.

The inspiration for this particular competition was to design something a US celebrity would wear to a Sports Event in Washington D.C.  Of all the places in the United States that a sporting event can be held, I never did understand why Washington D.C was the choice above all. Nonetheless, my celebrity choice was Cindy Herron from the group En Vogue.

I was a HUGE fan of this lady group of four (then turned three), and I loved their music. I would listen to their songs over and over again, making my commute back and forth to Boston with the many traffic delays, more bearable.

Cindy stood out to me for her voice, her beauty, and her classy and sexy style. I designed and created an outfit that I thought she would wear (and rock) to a football game. This outfit has always been one of my very favorites!

The video I have posted is old so the quality isn't very good. I apologize for that! What it lacks for in detail, it makes up in movement - just check out the blanket-coat!  And at the very end, are two photographs of the same outfit, taken more recently, on model, Ariel Binjour. Here is where you will be able to see the complicated details of this piece like, the hand-crocheted fringe on the blanket-coat, the gathered/ruching on the upper chest and bust, and the button-up-the-back and hood. What you may not be able to see is that this is a one-piece, and they are culottes shorts!

Even in present day, this outfit is relevant, so much so, I may just have to make it in leather. But what color??? Post your suggestions in the comments!
