It Never Grows Old

leather straps; cognac aztec leather, kuende twist braid strap

It's been 13 years and I'm still completely fascinated and amazed by the process of creating with leather. Each and every time I am in the midst of a project, I look at it and think, "this looks like crap". There are times when I want to trash it and start all over again but experience tells me differently, "Wait Lisa. Continue on. Don't give up now. Finish what you have started."

In the case of this pic, I started with an ordinary piece of Aztec Latigo leather (strap on the far right). I beveled it (second strap on the right). I sanded and smoothed the edges (second to the left strap). I treated the strap with color and added some decoration. I sunk my soul into a creation and whola! Something beautiful was transformed from mere nothingness (finished strap on the far left).

It's sort of like life, isn't it? Often times it looks ugly. We can't possibly believe something pretty will come out of our mess. We often want to give up and try something or someone new. But if we just stick with it, allow ourselves to feel the ache in our heart, understand and take ownership of our choices and decisions, bask in the honesty of our authenticity and vulnerability, something beautiful is born. If only... . . . . .
