Restoring a 30-Year-Old Motorcycle Jacket Back to Life

Some projects that come into my workshop are more than just repairs.

This motorcycle jacket belonged to a gentleman named Glen, a longtime rider who had been wearing this particular jacket for around 30 years. It had seen decades of riding, weather, wear, and life. By the time it came into my shop, the leather was heavily faded, dry in many areas, and showing significant signs of age throughout the sleeves, edges, and body of the jacket.

But despite the condition, it was immediately obvious this wasn’t just another jacket to him.

It carried history.

When I first inspected the jacket after cleaning and conditioning it, I could clearly see how much color had been lost over the years. Large portions of the leather were badly faded, especially across the sleeves, seams, edges, and back panels. The jacket had reached the point where it needed more than basic conditioning to bring it back to life.

Over the course of nearly 10 hours, I carefully conditioned, restored, and recolored the leather while trying to preserve the character and spirit of the original jacket. Restoration work like this is always a balance. The goal is not to erase the history of the piece, but to breathe life back into it while respecting the years it has already lived through.

One thing I’ve learned through restoration work is that people are often emotionally connected to the items they bring into my workshop. Sometimes it’s because of memories. Sometimes it’s because the item has simply been part of their life for decades. And sometimes, replacing it just wouldn’t feel the same.

When Glen returned to pick up his jacket, seeing his reaction made every hour worth it.

I didn’t capture the moment he first unwrapped it because honestly, I was too busy enjoying the moment myself. But I did manage to take a few photos and a short video afterward while he wore the jacket again for the first time since the restoration.

And apparently I did something right — because before leaving, Glen brought me a second motorcycle jacket to restore as well.

Projects like this remind me why I love restoration work so much. There’s something deeply satisfying about preserving well-made pieces that still have years of life left in them.
