The Story Behind My Autumn Rose Leather Flower Making Kit

Sometimes the most meaningful projects begin by taking something apart.

Several years ago, I created a leather flower entirely by hand. Every petal was individually cut, shaped, molded, and carefully assembled until it became one of my favorite leather flower designs. It wasn't created on a computer or from a template. It simply evolved through the creative process that has guided my leather work for more than twenty years.

Every petal was individually cut, shaped, molded, and assembled entirely by hand long before the idea for the Autumn Rose kit ever existed. Looking back now, it's amazing to think this very flower would eventually become the inspiration for something entirely new.

At the time, I assumed that flower would remain exactly what it was—a one-of-a-kind piece.

I had no idea it would eventually become something much bigger.

As people continued discovering my leather flower tutorials, I received more and more requests asking if I offered templates.

I did—but they were different.

My original template collection was designed digitally and has helped countless makers create beautiful leather flowers. Those templates remain one of my favorite teaching tools because they are balanced, repeatable, and easy to learn.

But I kept thinking about that original sculpted flower.

Its petals had an organic quality that couldn't simply be drawn on a computer.

If I wanted to teach that flower, I needed to find another way.

So I made a decision that probably sounds a little crazy.

I carefully disassembled my original leather flower.

One petal at a time.

Every layer was gently removed, softened in water, flattened, dried, and preserved so I could study the exact curves that had formed naturally during the cutting and sculpting process.

Those flattened leather pieces became the foundation for something entirely new.

Once each layer had dried, I traced every petal and digitized them one by one.

What emerged wasn't simply another template.

It became a way to preserve an original piece of leather art so other makers could experience building it themselves.

When you first see the template pieces lying flat, they may seem a little unusual.

That's because they weren't drawn to look beautiful on paper.

They are the actual sculpted curves of the original flower, carefully preserved so they can be recreated again and again.

Watching those unusual shapes transform back into a dimensional flower is one of my favorite parts of the entire process.

Layer after layer, something that appears simple on the table slowly comes to life.

It reminds me that many creative projects don't reveal their beauty until every piece has found its place.

That idea became the inspiration for my new Autumn Rose Leather Flower Making Kit.

And I wouldn't want them to be.
