A S H I R O — The Making of a Custom Leather Necklace
A custom commission. A study in transformation.
There are moments in a maker’s life when a piece arrives not as an order…
but as a question.
Can you create this?
It began with a message.
A young man reached out after searching for someone—anyone—who could help bring a piece to life. He sent images of a necklace from a cinematic world that had stayed with him. Not just for how it looked… but for what it represented.
Strength. Identity. Transformation.
There was an energy behind his words—an excitement that didn’t fade as the conversation continued. What began as a simple inquiry quickly unfolded into something deeper.
Over the course of dozens of messages, the piece began to take shape.
Not as a replica—
but as an interpretation.
The Build
At its core, the design called for something highly specific:
An 8-strand braided structure…
woven around stone.
Not strung.
Not added.
Integrated.
There was just one problem:
There was no roadmap.
No tutorial.
No reference.
No existing method to follow.
So the only option was to begin.
Scrap leather.
Test beads.
Trial and error.
The first breakthrough came quickly—faster than expected. A small prototype revealed not only that it could be done, but how the structure needed to behave. From there, the refinement began.
Scale. Proportion. Tension.
Each adjustment bringing it closer to what it needed to become.
Material Decisions
The original reference carried a rustic quality—something raw, almost primitive.
Finding a leather that matched both the look and the performance required for such a tight, structured braid proved to be its own challenge.
The solution came in the form of a material chosen not just for appearance…
but for capability.
A leather strong enough to hold structure,
refined enough to carry detail,
and resilient enough to endure.
The Stones
Five stones were chosen for the piece—three prominent, two subtle.
African Turquoise.
Often referred to as the Stone of Evolution, it is associated with growth, change, and forward movement. A fitting element for a piece that, in many ways, was about becoming something new.
The Turning Point
Some pieces come together gradually.
Others have a moment.
For this one, it was the clasp.
After exploring countless options that never quite felt right, a different idea emerged:
What if the closure wasn’t sourced…
but created?
A sculptural form.
Built by hand.
Designed specifically for this piece.
What followed was a process of shaping, refining, and reworking—less like assembling jewelry, and more like carving form.
Hours passed in that space.
And then, suddenly—
There it was.
The Moment It Became
The final transformation didn’t happen during construction.
It happened at the end.
With the braid complete, the piece was rolled and worked—compressed, smoothed, brought into itself.
And in that moment, something shifted.
The structure softened.
The form came alive. The piece arrived.
There’s a quiet moment every maker knows.
When you stop working…
and just look.
This was one of those moments.
The Finish
Some pieces are wrapped.
This one was presented.
A material was chosen not for necessity—but for harmony. Soft. Substantial. Complementary in tone and feel.
The edges of the form guided the shape of what would hold it—allowing the final presentation to emerge as organically as the piece itself.
Carefully placed.
Deliberately finished.
Sent with the same intention it was made with.
A Piece About Becoming
This necklace was inspired by the idea of transformation.
Not the kind that happens all at once—
but the kind that unfolds through process, persistence, and refinement.
The kind you work through.
The kind you earn.
Somewhere between the first braid and the final form,
this piece became more than what it started as.
And in many ways…
that’s the point.

When It Arrived
Not long after the piece was delivered, a message came through.
A simple note—but one that said everything.
“I’m at a loss for words… the craftsmanship on this piece is out of this world. I’m beyond happy with the results.”
There’s a quiet kind of satisfaction in moments like this.
Not just in completing the work—
but in knowing it arrived exactly as it was meant to.
